Our Past History

Cornerstone Church of Newark was originally founded on or about 1955, first beginning as the Newark Assembly of God.  The church’s original and founding Pastor was Reverend James B. Reynolds.   The portion of the building where the auditorium is now was the original building which was moved to its present location at 607 Pettit Drive  in 1955r.   It was told that some of the first meetings were held in the building with dirt floors.  Over the years the church has been upgraded, with a major inside renovation in 2008.   According to vague records, the proceeding pastor of the church was Reverend D. A. Foster.   The Reverend H. A. Geeo followed.  Geeo pastored the church up until his retirement in 2006.    Under the tenure of H. A. Geeo the church left the Assembly of God and became known as Cornerstone Church of Newark.  Pastor B J. Pennington followed.  B.J. Pennington resigned in July 2008.  Pastor Danny Slimp began his tenure  in September 2008 – present.

A news paper clipping was found that dated April 1975 (black and white photograph) of the Reverend H. A. Geeo, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Rowland, Harold Jones, Bill Coffer and Bud Smith, gathered together on the south side of the building.  It featured a ground breaking ceremony for the local paper showing construction was soon to begin on what is now  known as the “annex”   or “fellowship hall” portion of the building.  The addition also gave the church several Sunday school rooms, a kitchen, and meeting room for meals and other events.
To this date the building has not changed much in appearance since the completion of the annex.  The renovation of the porches and porch covers along with a perimeter fence and concrete parking lot were added throughout the years.

Edit: A steeple consisting of three crosses was added to the building in 2010.  Four talented volunteers constructed the steeple from the start on the buildings roof and it was completed in one day.  The design of the steeple has since been adopted as our logo with the name Cornerstone written thru the middle.  A unique design.
